What is vagabond manga?

Vagabond is a historical samurai manga series written and illustrated by Takehiko Inoue. It is loosely based on Eiji Yoshikawa's novel Musashi, which is a fictionalized account of the life of Japanese swordsman Miyamoto Musashi.

The manga depicts Musashi's journey from a wild and reckless youth to a highly skilled and enlightened swordsman, exploring themes of self-discovery, violence, and the search for meaning. It is known for its stunning artwork, realistic depictions of sword fighting, and philosophical depth.

Key elements of the story include Musashi's constant striving for strength, both physical and spiritual, as well as his interactions with other historical figures like Sasaki Kojiro. The manga delves into the brutal realities of 17th century Japan, including war, poverty, and the constant threat of violence. While a fictionalized account, Vagabond provides a compelling and often brutal look at samurai culture and the life of a legendary swordsman. The manga has been on hiatus for several years.
